you have been using a Mac for a long time, you may remember the After
Dark collection of screen savers from Berkeley Systems. The screen
savers included the famous Flying Toasters and the ever-popular Starry
Night.

The After Dark screen savers have long been little more than a fond
memory. That is, until Evan Green and Mind Console Productions decided
that recreating the Starry Night screen saver was a good idea.
We agree. After installing Starry Night, we were taken back to a time when the Mac Plus, with its screamingly-fast 8 MHz processor, was the king of the desktops. If you'd like to take your own trip down Nostalgia Lane, give Starry Night a try.

The Cold Hard Facts About the Magic Mouse

We're
fast approaching the coldest part of the winter here in New England.
For those of you who live in the area, or have family or friends here,
you've probably already heard about the October snowstorm of 2011. (If you're a "Vicar of Dibley" fan, it was The Great Storm, not to be confused with a moderately windy night.)

The storm did a great deal of damage around our property, including
sending a beautiful maple tree crashing into the solar arrays we use to
heat our home. The damage to the arrays hasn't been fixed yet; that will
likely be a spring project. That means that for the foreseeable future,
our primary heating system is defunct. In the meantime, we're relying
on a pellet stove and supplementary oil heat. To keep the cost down, we
turn off the pellet stove and the oil heat every night, and turn them
back on when we get up in the morning. Our cats haven't spoken to us
since late November.
Bear with me; I do have a point here, and it does involve the Magic Mouse.
It takes time for the house to warm up every morning; unfortunately, I'm in my home office long before the indoor temp approaches anything near comfortable. When I sit down at my Mac, the surface temp of my Magic Mouse is about -12. Putting my hand on the mouse's touch surface is scary, not unlike licking a flagpole in February. I'm afraid that one of these mornings, my skin will stick to the cold, hard surface of the mouse and not let go until July.
I considered mittens, but the touch surface isn't really mitten-friendly. I'd try another mouse, but I'm really fond of the Magic Mouse, although I'm fonder of it when it's warm. I tried the Magic Trackpad, but it's just as cold as the Magic Mouse.
My solution is to drink lots of steaming hot coffee. I hold the mug in my mouse hand whenever I don't need to use the mouse. I'm reading web sites more slowly than usual these days, but hey, whatever works.
And how are you dealing with the challenges of winter?

Apple Reveals iBooks 2, iBook Author, and Updated iTunes U

its educational event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City this
morning, Apple revealed its new textbook publishing and distribution
system. It also updated iTunes U to better serve educators in creating
online courses.

iBooks 2
is an update to the current iBooks reader app for the iPad. This new
version is designed for use with interactive educational textbooks that
will be produced using various publishing tools, including Apple's own
iBook Author. Apple is partnering with McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, three of the leading textbook publishers in
the U.S.
Apple says no textbook will cost more than $14.99. Students can keep their textbooks forever, and even re-download them from Apple's cloud servers at any time. Authors can update their textbooks at any time as well.
Some of the new interactive textbook titles are already available via the new iBooks 2 app.
iBook Author is a new free application from Apple that will allow anyone to create interactive textbooks, upload the textbooks for sale in the iBooks 2 store, or upload them for free distribution through iTunes U. iBook Author comes with a handful of templates for various textbook types, and widgets for controlling interactive content.
iTunes U, which has had lecture series available for a long time, has been updated to support taking complete courses on the iPad. Yale, Duke, MIT, and Stanford already have coursework available via iTunes U. iTunes U now includes course overviews and outlines of course plans, and offers users the ability to track assignments, collect and manage course notes, read textbooks, view videos, listen to audio, and much more.
This is Apple's first really big push into the textbook publishing world, and with three of the big textbook players already on board, Apple may redefine the way textbooks are created, sold, and used. Only time will tell.
